what a way to start the day...

that roo was spectacular! the play of lights on his feathers astounded me. He inspired me to order eggs to have a group just like him.

RIP Popcorn. So Sorry for your loss.
Freaking Coyotes...... I wish I had a better way to make sure i'd never have another critter attack.
The last Critter loss was to a skunk. Funny it got in the coop couldn't get out. So it only killed 1 bird before my Redbone turned on the fire alarm, and we fixed the problem.

Hatched the 1st splash Silkie this morning of a batch of a couple of dozen. There was 3 others piping this morning. Right on Time - Due today! The parents are onsite. Incubating home raised eggs are so much eaiser then shipped in eggs.
The last two sets of shipped eggs i hatched this year where both a couple of days late .... scary. But so cute. I got eggs from Fowl r us and the colors are nice, isabella/ porceiln, growing very fast and the hatch rate was 50%. The Cat Dance eggs hatch rate are 25% but the chicks are very mellow, There is no fear of the hand coming into the brooder to pick them up, I'm very pleased with the temperment, its rare to have chicks that don't react when i go to change the water or food bowl and they are they only hatched last Friday. They make very little nosie. I'm very excited to add them to the family of silkies we have. I'm trying to have my hubby let me keep them inside for a couple more weeks (we had a chicken shed) But if they're in the office/incubator room i see them so much more and hold them so much more.

The chick this morning had a nice vaulted skull but was still wet. I have a photo of one of the hens, took the photo 3 weeks ago. The hen is now Broody.... I do have more of her eggs in the bator, but i'm not sure how many i will get for the rest of the year.

O
Oh no!!! Did a coyote get into your big pen or a small pen?

Popcorn got out of the small pen :/ it has a latch and chain lock but was probably left unlocked (by me)...so it was only latched.... there are eight hens in that pen and none were hurt. So I am assuming he came out on his own..... totally preventable. Sad and disappointed. I need to be more careful.

Somewhere on one of these threads i remember someone having put in a door with a timer so it would lock at the "set" time. Timers are cheap - but i know nothing about setting a system like that up. I remember thingking when i read the thread that it would work great if i could get my hubby to put it in. I'll add the link if i can find it.
