San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hey folks - need some help here. Doing some "spring" cleaning and found this scary thing. It is about an inch long and has a huge body. It was not too keen of being photographed.
Does anyone know what this spider is, and is it dangerous, and should it be in a food storage area?

Looks like a black widow to me. Bout the only spider I dispatch without question. If you are getting them around your place make sure you look in your shoes and gloves before putting them on. probably a good idea anyway.

Thanks. Emily says it is a male black widow.
I have since found half a dozen more adults, as well as babies. Just having a minor freak here. Hate using chemicals but this is a safety issue.

FWIW they are not deadly but if you have allergies that could be an issue.

I one time stuck my hand in a glove when i worked in a machine shop. Lunch break was over time to work I felt a poke on my finger .... I thought it was a metal chip so i pulled my finger out and this was chewing on the end of it......

They are called Wind Scorpions or Camel Spiders. And those manibles are Four that could open wide enough to include the tip of my finger. Needless to say it didnt stay on my finger long. Not poisonous per se just ikky and startling.

This was in Jamul by the way.

Next door found a baby rattle snake in a sock, and another neighbor a tarantula on their stairs.

A few days ago I found a scorpion in our hall way. Is this the wild west??

DH is sorting out the spiders

LOL.... Well It IS the wild west.... Here in Santee you can find scorpions Under your pillow or under the door mat... again not too bad a sting unless you are allergic.

Those baby rattle snakes scare me more that the four footers Tom killed on my property. He ate em by the way so I have no problem with them being dispatched. But baby rattlesnakes have only one button and it doesnt make much noise. And when they bite they don't know how to control how much poison they inject so they inject it all. Adults actually can.

EVERYone in San Diego should know how to deal with rattle snake bite. Or have a Snake bite kit.

luckily my big girls scarf down spiders, even black widows, as well as mice they steal from the cat, lizards and probably snakes to if they find little ones. The brahma and silkie chicks had a japanese beetle today but couldn't quite figure out how to eat it before it got away. Was funny watching them try to be brave when it was really kinda scary.

Hi Guys

We're overrun with roosters! We have several really nice fellows, a couple of LF barred rocks (Good Shepherd via Jeremy) & LF RIR's (Mohawk lines). All are heritage, about 16 or 17 months old & from breeders, Paul (Greathorse) & JWIP on BYC. Just got too many & not enough pens! They're on their way to the local feedstore tomorrow, so if you're interested give me a shout. I also have several nice pairs of bantam barred rocks (all under 8 months) parents were from Dick Horstman. I have some young BBR's (unsexed) that I'd like to find homes for.. I'd love to trade the bantam pairs for a large bag of lay crumbles or pellets.....
I'm in Valley Center, but could deliver to Escondido.

I don't really post so I'm not able to get many PM's. Best way to reach me is my email, [email protected].
