San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I just saw my bantam frizzled naked neck mount one of my other birds. I was under the impression that my frizzled naked neck was a hen. Does it necessarily mean that she is a he if she mounted another hen? I haven't heard any crowing at all.

Not necessarily. I have a BCM hen who is very dominant and mounted not only another hen, but a young cockerel--who was, of course, horrified. He ran away, kind of shivered a little, then started crowing over and over, "I AM a man, I AM a man." We call that hen Nurse Ratched. She was tough, but mellowed out awhile after she started laying.

Hehe, I came across an adjective for my chicken that could quite possibly describe her aptly. It could be that she's a 'lesbiHen'!!!!!

I'm gonna need more therapy chickenz. My stepmom passed away this morning from the cancer that was just found last Wednesday. I'm not sure if I'll be in the country for the meetup. Her entire family is in Mexico and my dad has decided we will bury her in her homeland. I will know our travel dates soon but not online much so please forgive my slow replies. Life happens and we just have to take it one breath at a time.

I'm so very sorry to hear this... what a sad time for your family.

In chicken news, I have yet another broody hen - a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. This particular hen has only been laying for a short time, which is exactly what happened with my last broody, a Marans. I really do not have the separate space to house a broody and her clutch right now, so I'm doing my first round of "Broody Busting". This morning I plucked her out of the nestbox and put her in a private cage with a smooth plastic floor - no bedding. She was really squawking and carrying on; I felt awful.

I just did some poking around on BYC, and read that this may take anywhere from a few days to a week. For those of you who have successfully broken a broody, what was your experience?

At least a week. I put newspaper in layers on the bottom of my pen. As it gets dirty I pull a layer out. Helps keep the bird from getting too gross.

Haha awesome pic RHRanch. I'll take that BCM roo with the OE roos. I should be there on the 9th unless school interferes.

I can't make the meetup on the 9th.... maybe I can bring them to you on the weekend of the second? Or maybe someone else who lives near me might be willing to bring them along to the meetup for us? (I live in the Vista - san marcos-escondido area) Which BCM do you want, the LF from the super dark egg color line or the "bantam" BCM?
