San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Thank You all for your kind words and support.

I am fighting the roundworms as I type with Wazine, ACV and pumpkin seeds.

The broody has taken a long dust bath and hopefully will get over it. With the weather warming up the way it does right now, I am pretty sure it was not the last broody hen for this year.
Anyways, I hope that I was the only one on here who had to go to work today and that everyone else is having a

Happy Memorial Day

Hi everyone! I am wondering if there's anyone who might want to take those two Chinese ganders from Lake Murray and give them a home. They've gotten extremely aggressive, especially to ME!

A lot of other people get attacked by them, too and most people aren't as tolerant of them as I am. So, I am hoping someone will get them out of them before someone really hurts them. Strange things have already happened there including something that I think was an attempt to harm them. If you don't know anyone who wants them, perhaps you can direct me to a rescue agency. I can easily catch them as they always come up to me, but I don't have an cage to put them in and I don't know if they'll fit in my car with a cage.

Edited for grammar.

Darlene - This is breeding season and the birds are all going to be more territorial. If he is attacking you, it is because he sees you as a threat and you are too close to home. It's best to stay further from the flock to avoid this.
Also, It is against the law to remove them from Lake Murray under Mission Trails Regional Park rules. If you are concerned you should take your issue to the Senior Ranger for Mission Trails and he will direct you to the proper person in charge. Personally, If you think they are a danger to others and should be relocated then you should talk to the proper authority about it, otherwise I would let them be - you could get yourself into trouble, and I suggest not attacking them back either. That could land you in trouble if the wrong person sees you doing it, and could be considered abusive to some... and besides it only makes the goose see you as a bigger threat that will show his flock harm.
They are doing what is only natural to them, humans are invading their habitat, not the other way around. The rangers are trained and will know if the situation is worrisome that they need to be relocated, and will do so if they are a danger to anyone. There are many areas within Mission Trails that they can be relocated to and where they will be undisturbed if they see it necessary. I've spoken personally with the Senior Ranger, he is a nice and helpful man and will listen. Before taking it into your own hands, you should talk to an authoritative professional for the park. It does not help relocating animals from the wild to domestic settings and in some cases can kill them. Geese are very sensitive and it could cause them severe stress to remove them from the flock at the lake (including the ducks) which is their family and has been for years. Again as it was with Tom, for their health and safety, it's best not to meddle.

First of all, these ganders are ALL OVER the picnic areas where people are allowed to be and are attacking people. I am 100% not doing anything wrong in the least. I am usually at or near a picnic table, minding my own business when they run up and attack me for no reason. I'm not feeding them, either or doing anything to attract their attention. The only thing I do differently than other people is not back down, run away, or go out of my way to avoid them. I will, however, defend myself and push them out of the way if they attack. 75% of the time, they're fine, but it's that 25% of the time that they're bad.

I've already talked to the senior ranger and the park staff and have told them what I do to defend myself. Not a single person, so far, has had any problem with it. In the past, people have threatened to kill the geese and park staff have told people that they didn't care and didn't want them there. The ranger has had complaints about these two before and refuses to remove them and the humane society won't either. One day, someone's going to sue the city over them if this continues.

I am calling the ranger for the lake again to ask if this is allowed or not. I have not seen nor heard of any law saying that it is illegal to remove domestic waterfowl from the lake. Please quote me the law that you mentioned because people rescue domestic animals from the lake often with no problem.

These two are not part of a "flock", they are a male-male pair and there is one Canada gander with them. Everyone and everything else avoids them, including the other 8 geese whom have all left the area.

ETA: They will NOT relocate dumped domestic waterfowl to another area in the park. If anything, they will remove them to a waterfowl rescue place or to the humane society.

Tammy - are "pepitas" pumpkin seeds? (hoping not to sound like an idiot!) - I have some that I bought at Trader Joes for my rabbit.

Anke - sorry about the broody and the worm situation. However, I am learning a lot from this discussion - so, thank you!

Sunny - congrats on the babies - how fun! I know exactly how you feel - I am enjoying my 5 babies and Mama is doing a grand job too. Much easier than raising them myself - most definitely the way to go - and she works for chicken feed!!

Darlene, I know nothing about the park system but I agree w/ Tammy that the ranger should be contacted. I am sorry that they are so aggressive. I hope that he takes a chill pill. I look at it this way. I highly doubt that it is okay to just remove them because if that was the case people of my skin color would be having peking duck and roasted goose. Please do not take it the wrong way.

Hi Everyone, I know that most of us are up to our limits w/ birds and roos. Just going to throw it out there just in case.

The downside of hatching and my luck are too many roos.

It just seems wrong to process a Lav. AM but I will do what I have to do.

I have 2 Lav. AM's, 3 Split AM's, and a whole lot of Icelandic Chickens. I purchased some AM eggs from Mary- the Warden and she sent me some Icelandic hatching eggs, I of course put them in the incubator. I did not know they are not LF. I like my chickens BIG and friendly, these not so much. Males and females are up for grabs. I also got 2 BCM roos from Phage. Was hoping for pullets.

1 is BIG and friendly and loves to be held, the other is smaller. I know nothing about colors since I only wanted DARK eggs. They are the friendliest roos I have raised in a long time. It just feels wrong to process them. Just pm me with any interest. I will not hold my breath though.
