Hi Miriam, I'm working on becoming NPIP certified right now;

You have to call and get the packet, then they send it to you... you fill it out and send it back stating what you have and what you want NPIP certified. Then they schedule someone to come out and test ALL of your birds, every single one (but only the first time, after that it's like a percentage) AND every bird you own has to be banded, so if one of the tests come back positive they know which bird it is. ALSO, (the reason I haven't done it yet) is that it's $100 per year, PLUS the cost of them coming out, PLUS the cost of testing each bird.

AND they have to test like 3 times a year= expensive. ALSO they only test for 2 items, I believe MG and CRD, there are additional tests available, but again more money... Not worth the price to me yet, but I have my packet and everything so it's in the works.

Thanks Cari,
It was not actually for me, but even if I was thinking about it, that alone would put me way off!!
Seriously, if the industry want to keep flocks protected they could make it cheaper like in many other states, AND maybe test primarily for diseases that are relevant.

On a totally different note... I know the hens are not laying (well except the silkies and leghorn who don't know its winter and are laying like crazy) but it seems that the birds are eating less food. Is that usual?

Oh and talking of layers, come spring I may have a bunch of project silkie x leghorn girls. After they have laid some eggs for the next generation, they will be available.
They should be laying machines, and the chicks so far have more of a silkie personality than a leghorn one. They are black.

LMK if anyone would be interested.

okay my turn to post total cutenesses.

Allison, Does your friend still have the pullets? I would be interested but not sure when I will be in SD.

I also wanted to let you know that I still have both scruffy hens from you. The move was harder on the Buff Orpington. She hangs out at the nest box more than I would like. Edna has blended right in and is one of my FAV's.

She is not far from my feet looking for handouts. She is laying a HUGE egg. The BO is a freeloader.

Hope all is well with your flock.

Nancy

Hi Nancy, I just spoke with her last night so I'm pretty sure she still has them. I'll see how long she's willing to hold onto them. If you PM your address maybe I can see if you're anywhere close to my son and he could bring them up to you the next time he's down here.

I'm glad you're still enjoying the girls. You'll have to post pics of your new place. I'm adding to my flock with Swedish Flower Hens. I chose them because of their friendliness, hardiness and variety of color they offer. I have two in my brooder and will be getting more eggs soon. I hope to build up a decent flock.

Good hearing from you!!
