San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Kind of an "eggciting" day around here... I got TWO green eggs. One is definitely a pullet egg, and is a beautiful green. I have three theories:

1. My EE laid twice in one day. (Not likely; the eggs are very different.)

2. One of my Ameraucana pullets started laying (they are 28 weeks), but is laying green.

3. My homebred EE x Speckled Sussex pullet (also 28 weeks) got her mama's blue gene, and is a true EE! She does have a peacomb, so ???

I need a camera out there. Sigh.

Sorry for the double post - my computer went a little Twilight Zone on me!

I wanted to get some expert opinions on these eggs:

Eggs2.jpg

1. Barred Rock
2. Salmon Faverolle
3. New green pullet egg; not blue in the slightest
4. EE
5. Fairly dark brown; not sure who's laying this one. Maybe a little darker than my Red Star's egg; smooth color.
6. Speckled egg; could be from many different breeds.

What's your opinion on egg #3? I'm thinking/hoping that my homebred is laying this one. The only other choices are my Ameraucana pullets.

What about egg #5? I was initially thinking that the homebred pullet was laying these, but maybe not. My other choices are:

FBC Marans
Cuckoo Marans (I don't think she's ready, but she's been in the nest boxes)
SL Wyandotte (she's not ready either)
EE Mix
And I feel like I'm forgetting somebody...

Maybe it's my crummy cell phone camera, but #3 is green. I even asked my hubby to scrutinize, and he said, "Totally green!"

I guess I'll just wait and see what else appears in the nest boxes... the Ameraucanas are almost 29 weeks, so it has to happen soon, right?

Ameraucanas lay blue eggs ranging in color to slightly green.... the goal is to breed for Blue Eggs. So It will depend on who the breeder was and if they were breeding for egg color wether you will get consistantly blue eggs.

Auracanas lay blue eggs but they are difficult to breed and not prolific layers. Because of the genetics of being rumpless and having cheek tufts. The hatch rate on chicks is very low. So you wouldn't be raising them for eggs though they eggs are definitely blue.

What Deb said..

They should be Blue, but depending on the color variety some lay more greenish and some lay more bluish... the goal being to breed towards a real good blue.

Ameraucanas are a breed still in development with a long way to go.

What did Tom Petty say? "The waiting is the hardest part."

Like time eventually tells whether hen or roo, I guess time will tell who's laying what.
