San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

My Ameraucanas are FINALLY laying! (Well, one of of my two.) 39 weeks. (Yes, that's correct. Practically a full-term human gestation!) The egg is petite and very blue... I am thrilled. I got eight eggs today, which is a new high for 2012.

Yay! That's SO awesome!!! And one good thing about the Blacks is that they do lay VERY good colored eggs.... CONGRATS!!!

Good morning San Diegans!

I am starting to research chickens since the law is finally changing and am so overwhelmed I can't even begin. Are there local places to get rarer chicks or is it strictly a mail order deal? I would rather buy local if possible and I really don't want to order so many, since my "legal" limit is 5 I believe.

I am all over this forum for information, but if you have any other links, please post!!

Thanks!
Elizabeth (missusC)

Ps. Obviously I am looking for chickens that will do well in our area -- Mira Mesa)

Hi there! What kinds of breeds are you looking for? Many of our members are fairly regular hatchers (ahem), and have lots of rare breed options. If you are limited to five chickens, you want them to be your absolute favorites!

Thanks for all the congratulations on my "Better Late Than Never" Ameraucanas! I will take pictures today, and celebrate my precious little blue egg.

Also, I have let Renee bully me into helping fill up her incubator space. (I'm kidding, Renee!

) I have to decide what eggs to take to her place... I'm thinking sexed Olive Eggers!

There is practically no chicken that doesn't do well here. Some of the heavy feathered ones like Cochins may need extra shade in the summer. Happy dance for being able to have chickens.... Woo Hoo
