Sand bath?

I have a baby pool I want to make my chicks a sand bath , they are ranging from 5 to 7 weeks old what’s the best thing to use? Just sand? Sand and ash? Potting soil? Dirt? What is the cheapest thing that will be good for them and fulfill all the needs?

I have tried sand before and they never use it or care. They ignore the beautiful approved setup and opt to bathe in the flower pots and raised beds!
