Sand Baths

I order de by mail...50lbs at a time...I use with sweet pdz in the outside run and by itself for inside coop. Love it!

I use wood ash mixed with fill dirt in an old wheelbarrow for their bathing pleasure...the top hens use the wheelbarrow, lower level girls use the ground. A llllll day long we have bathing beauties doing their thing.

I don't think you have to do anything, and you certainly don't have to offer sand in order for them to have a good quality of life.

Our run is good old dry dusty dirty - the super fine stuff that comes from mountain top clay. Our girls LOVE it and make their dust bath craters all over the place. We sprinkle a very itty bitty bit of DE around now and again, and if they get down to rocks or remove quite a bit of material in a particular area we'll throw in charcoal and/or wood ash.

what's DE?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Never mind, I figured it out.
