ok ok ok new plan. I just read about the deep litter method and from what I'm reading it sounds like it'd be just right for me. What if I put my first layer of pine shavings on top of the sand, forget about the decomposed granite, and just do the deep litter method on top of the sand layer? Presumably the sand will end up getting mixed-in with the deep litter somewhat when I stir it...but maybe that's not a problem? What do you think of my new plan...good idea/bad idea?Gotcha. When you say course sand what type are you talking about? Construction sand or what?Just because others have done it, doesn't mean that it is okay. Play sand is not recommended for brooders or for coops. Just like they are not recommended for reptiles... It causes impaction and impacted crops.
Course sand is recommended for the health of the birds.
Yes. Construction, builders, or contractor. The one with course chunks in it. Not one that is constant throughout like play sand. When you say course sand what type are you talking about? Construction sand or what?
I use deep litter and it’s great. I use leaves, grass, and pine shavings. It works great and makes great compost for the next year for my gardens.ok ok ok new plan.
