We have a small elevated coop - about 6' x 2' - with a wood floor. I think I'd like to use sand in the coop but I'm worried that we won't be able to have it deep enough. Everything I've read says we need at least 6" and we can't possibly make it that deep. My husband thinks that we can put a lip around the inside edge of the walls along the floor and put it maybe 2" of sand. Will it work? Does it absolutely have to be deeper?

6" seems way too deep for a coop. For the run, yes. For the coop I would think two ot three inches would be fine. FWIW, I do not use sand in the coop though, only the run.

From experience with having sand in the coop, you only need it deep enough to catch the poop. Mine is about an inch deep, maybe two in some places. With linoleum floors, it’s so easy to keep clean. Once a week I go in and sift through it like it’s a cat box. Even the wet poops dry up pretty quick with little sand under it.
