I went with sand and so far love it.

I went with sand as well over a drainage rock base because of clay soil drainage issues. I used a concrete/construction sand because it was only 23$ a yard and ranged from fine sand to small pebbles. The girls have been on it just over a week and are taking dust baths, scratching around in it and just generally loving it! No smell as well!
