Sand in brooder? Pine causing sneezing

We live in the era of safety culture for sure.
Some things I understand and am glad have changed. Like seatbelts. My sister flew into the windshield at the hard stop of a near accident when she was 5 or so and was injured, because nobody wore seatbelts back then. But other things... are just too much. Like sandboxes. We gotta look for the golden middle!

I think a good portion of people now have no idea what the middle is unfortunately. For these it's a scary place, were things are shades of grey, and non-dogmatic, but I better quit before this bleeds out into politics :)

There was a "recent" study done in Britain where they realized that the inability of children to hurt themselves was creating completely stunted, non-functional adults. They're reintroduced "controlled risk" playgrounds in primary schools as a result. I guess the premise being "a broken leg is better than a broken brain".

A couple of years ago all the playgrounds in our town got torn down and rebuilt. We got some fancy new equipment, which was nice. But all the sandboxes disappeared and were not replaced! With "hygiene" being the reason. Seriously! Who disinfects the beach? I'm glad I have a house with a back yard so my kids can know what a sandbox is. The kids downtown in apartments... probably won't :(
Roaming cats sometimes use public sandboxes as a litter box.

Yes, but this causing harm to children is incredibly rare, and more common in developing countries where there are more stray/roaming animals, and where worms are more commonly present in animals and in the environment. Bathtubs are probably more dangerous to children, but there’s no crusade against them…

But they love scratching! It denies them one of the pleasures of being a chicken. And it’s very wasteful and gross. With loose litter like shavings or sand, the poops get mixed in with the bedding and it takes a while until it starts looking dirty. With paper towels, every poop is visible, stepped in and carried around, and you find yourself cleaning up a lot more often and going through a large amount of paper towels.
