I am planning to place sand in my new run and have read all the forum's reasons why. As I live less than a mile from the bay beach, can I use beach sand (which is extremely clean and appears to be fine to medium sand.)?

My only concern is that it might be pretty salty. Chickens and a lot of other inland birds can't handle extra salt the way sea gulls and other beach birds can. They will eat the sand to use as grit. If you can figure out how, I'd suggest you rinse it with fresh water before you put it in. I don't know that there would be enough salt to hurt them, but I consider rinsing a reasonable precaution.

Other than potential problems with salt, it should work great.
