I have read people use sand in the run, but I was wondering about in the coop, if people use sand? Also is it just normal sand like you use in sand lot for kids or a pool filter?

What about pea gravel?

I think I read someone saying they can scoop the sand up like a kitty litter box?

And last do you put in in the brood boxes? Or something else?

Thanks for any input.

A coarse clean sand is best, less dust and clumping/hardening from moisture.

Pea gravel, not a great idea.

Haven't read about anyone using sand in nests....usually chopped straw or wood shavings.

Pine shavings in the nest boxes or hay is best. Straw can come with mites inside it. I would think pea gravel would be a mess to clean. I like pine shavings inside--deep litter method is the easiest to maintain. In tiny coops Sweet PDZ is like kitty litter, and is non-toxic, drying, clean, and easy to sift poo out of. Poop boards work great with it.
