Sand in the coop run?

We are new to raising chickens and live in Palmer, Alaska. Our coop is about finished but we are wondering about putting sand in the run. Pros - Cons? What's best for colder temps?

I understand that the sand is too hard for them in winter and they injure themselves jumping down from the roost. I am including a link on the topic of the pro's and con's of using sand as litter.
