Hi! I live near Phoenix and am just starting my flock. I’ve read that river or construction sand is the best for runs but I’m concerned the sand will be too hot in the summer months for their little feet. Does any one have any experience or advice? I’d GREATLY appreciate it!!

I’ve heard the same thing about sand where it’s probably the best to use. I personally don’t because of the size of my run and being able to get sand there and out of there I use the deep litter method. I think sand works depending on your climate and your set up. Is your run covered?

I use sand in the coop and run but being in Western New York we don’t get anywhere near as hot as you.
But if the sand is not exposed to direct sunlight (ie a covered coop or run) I don’t think it would get too hot- I’ve walked on different beaches and on cloudy days the sand doesn’t seem hot to the touch.
I love using sand but hopefully someone from your climate will weigh in. Mine is all covered so it doesn’t get hot on the 95+ degree days since it’s not getting direct sunlight.

It’s not right now but I plan on covering it before it gets too hot. I think the shade will help with the temp of the sand but I really wanted to know if anyone in AZ has tried it.
