I haven't been able to find appropriately sized grit for my 4-5 week old babies, so I have been sifting the larger grit (designed for 8 wks up) to get smaller pieces.
Well this is a huge pain... I was wondering if we could give them sand instead. We have lots of it here, and just yesterday my Dd filled her shoes with it at the playground, lol.

yeah, i had this same question too awhile back and i was told that YES, u can use sand....as long as it doesn't have chemicals in it.

My chickens run-around on a fair amount of ground..I've NEVER provided any GRIT. But, just this week, I put a bag of sand out in the "Chicken Area" because I don't see any small stones in that area any longer. I have heard that it is "sufficient". The feed stores want about $5.00 for 2 or 3 lbs. of Grit. 50/60 lbs. of Sand cost me less than $5.00 at the Lumber Yard.

I dunno....

...I ain't a chicken....but I know that my dog is fairly "flexible" in what he eats...Chickens just use it for "teeth".

P.S. I suppose that the chickens will appreciate it. (My Dog won't EAT Sand, so..they've got it ALL TO THEMSELVES !!!)
