Sand instead of pine shavings as bedding?

I use DE in my coop in their run and where they like to dust bathe. In the pine shavings in their coop I sprinkle FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth (DE) on the shavings. Also my roosts in one of my coop are over wire which allows the poop through and I sprinkle the DE over the poop too. The pine shavings are on the floor in the rest of the coop. Monthly I add some shavings and weekly I add DE. Once in awhile I throw some scratch on the shaving with the DE and let the chickens mix it up. They do a very good job. I have no problems with fleas, flies, mites, lice, stink and such. My pine shavings stay nice and dry easy to clean out. My other coop does not have a poop pit and I have to clean it out more often. When I build my new coop since most of the poop seems to accumulate under the roosts I'm going to put poop catch pans under the roosts with pine shavings and DE in them and eliminate the poop pit. I do compost my shavings with the poop.

I definitely want to know more about poop catch pans under the roosts. It is the only place my coop needs attention. The rest of it is stirred up quite nicely by the Ladies of Orpington Manor.

Also, where do you get food grade DE? I need to add this to my shopping list.

I have the same problem they stir everything but under my roost which is impossible for them to scratch around under.

Here is a picture of my roost!

I am in shock over how clean that is!! I have never seen a coop with walls that clean, let alone a perch and floor like that.

I must congratulate you on the impressive work. Very nice!

I looked at that coop and one of the things I would have done would be to put up a 2 x 4 roost above the present one and slide some rubbermaid containers under for poop trays to save on some work! You have a lot of chickens!!!! I ended up with something different but I just love that coop!

I have been thinking about what changes to make that might be one I do have a few to many chickens for this coop but right now only 9 live in there and there is no aggression of fighting between them the other 5 hens will go in the two cockerals are hopefully being rehomed.
