Sand or dirt?

The only drawback we have with sand here is fleas, untill the grass covers it,but mabe flea arn't bad where you are.

It does look nicer than dirt, and not near as messy in the wet weather.

Yay Chicks! :

So, I'm just going to add another option to the mix that has worked well for me thus far. I have a large sweet gum that drops a gazillion leaves in the fall. I have been adding those dried leaves weekly to the run. They love to spread them out, then they trample them into dirt. No smell, and this is a suburban yard. I am beginning to run out of leaves, however. I'm thinking this fall I'll be raking up the neighbors leaves as well. So, if you have some large deciduous trees...

Yes Yes,

this works wonders, we put leaves in the nesting and roosting areas when it's going to rain, it looks nice ,the eggs stay clean when laid and the chcikens turn them into dirt in a matter of days.

Oh and they are free.

I started with grass, but with the rainy spring we had, the poop mushed into the grass and made a foul mess. Now I have paver sand and am loving it, however the birds don't want to sit around in it. I added a small amount straw over the sand and we are all happy. I just rake out the straw and poop once in a while.
