I gave my 4 chickens (3 months old) some white sandbox sand to dust in but all they wanted to do was eat it. will it hurt them? Is it the wrong kind of sand?

If your chickens seem to be eating a lot of sand, they may need grit. I would suggest buying some grit for them and maybe mixing some soil with the sand, so they can still play in it but it won't cause any blockages.
