Welcome to BYC and many blessing to you and your situation. I certainly hope that you are a registered voter, and with that said, have you contacted the people who are higher up? State/county represenatives and the senate and govener. Why stop with the little rich kids, why not squeeze them from all sides!!! (If you already haven't- or we all can write, give us email or any type of address, your BYC family will help support your needs for keeping those "girls", if all else, fails, "farm" them out for a while else where to save your financial obligation to pay the fines, NEVER GIVE UP!
Sorry I'm so far away or I'd be down there picketting! Grrrrowl.
Good move. People, especially city officials, should be wiser in today's climate about interjecting race or ethnicity into any, let alone relatively benign, issues.
Just wanted you to know that I emailed Sanford City Council in support of Alex Reid's proposal. This is what I wrote:

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing in support of Alex Reid, and her request to change the city ordinance, in regards to having backyard chickens.
From what I have read, she has proposed several ideas and regulations, such as an enclosed coop and run, 50 feet away from the home, and must be on a large piece of land. I think this is a reasonable solution.
I reside outside of Tucson, AZ, and the city allows up to 24 pullets or hens, no roosters are allowed. The housing for the fowl needs to be kept clean and sanitary, and at least 50 feet from the home. As for the smell that is often associated with chickens, for the small backyard flock, it is not an issue. After chicken droppings dry out, there is little to no odor, so it does not draw flies. And if bugs do get in the run or coop, the chickens are happy to take care of them for you. They also like to eat weeds.
Backyard chickens are pets who provide eggs and sometimes food. Because these chickens are usually raised from baby chicks, the owner has control of what the chickens eat, organic or non-organic, medicated or non-medicated feed. This is important if the chickens are raised for meat. The eggs that these chickens lay taste better and are healthier, depending on what they are fed.
Because of this country's financial situation, not having to pay for eggs or store bought chickens (who are given growth hormones), saves money for gas, other groceries, etc.
Chickens are also therapeutic. They help reduce stress after a long day of work.
If a child is raising the chickens, it gets them out of the house and away from the video games, or tv. They teach the child responsibility for feeding and watering them, and cleaning up after them. The child may also take an interest in hatching their own chicks. Chickens are very social animals and the kids just like to play with them.
You can see the benefits of having backyard chickens. Cheaper and healthier eggs and meat which lead to healthier people, therapeutic, bug and weed control, and they teach children responsibility.
I think you should take Alex Reid's proposal seriously, and allow backyard chickens in your city of Sanford. Your residents who want chickens, will benefit from the above. And even if residents don't want any chickens, but live close to one who does, they may benefit from any extra eggs.
Thank you for your time concerning this matter.

I have also been voting. So much so, that it tells me that I already voted.
I want to add that I've been voting daily and would like to send some emails but for your sake I won't. I don't think I could keep it civil. My pet chickens and my meat chickens have provided so much for my family. The kids are outside 3xs a day to check water and food. That means they are "OUTSIDE". It's a contest between my youngest 2 to see who can collect the most eggs!! I was surprised at how they have all 3 chipped in to care for the meat chickens. Knowing that they will be dinner soon. My oldest can even trim the flight feathers on our pet chickens. We as a family have learned so much about the care of chickens. I believe we have even grown closer as a family by taking care of all of our chickens. I couldn't imagine what I would do if I had to get rid of the chickies. It would be devastating. I will vote everyday for you but I know a letter from me would be ugly. So I will hold back!
