Thanks all. Alex

Ok Chicken Lovers I just got this email and I need to know what to do, because I an ready to take the gloves off and slam city council.

Alexandra:

Sorry I missed you too. Your husband was very gracious and introduced me to your lovely hens.

By the way, the letter the Herald published yesterday was not the one I revised and finally submitted. I'm attaching the completed one, FYI.

I had lunch at Councilman Steve Brewer's restaurant today (he is my nephew Greg's friend), and I proselytized him regarding the July 15th meeting. Apparently, he has already made up his mind how he will vote regardless of any other opinions. He says that his issue for voting against keeping backyard poultry is (1) his district does not want it, and (2) "there are 15,000 Hispanic people who would then keep chickens and everything would get out of control." I doubt he could possibly know whether either of those concerns are true. He said that it would take at least two more police officers to enforce such an ordinance. (A Chicken Patrol Unit?) I replied that it was good Sanford would be able to create two more jobs, because local jobs always served to contirbute more abundance in the community that ultimately enriches everyone.

It appears that all of the objections center around the preconception that citizens are inherently too stupid to know how to keep companion animals; that if a majority wants the enforcement of an ordinance, the freedoms of a minority should be exempt from consideratio; and that what the governing body fears might happen is reason enough to avoid basing their decisions on what actually is.

You'd think it wouldn't be necessary to fight ignorance, but it is the intense obstinance that accompanies narrow-mindedness that keeps it entrenched where it sits.

Let me know if I can do anything to help. Otherwise, I will see you at the Council meeting on the 15th.

Joanna

You need to publish that letter Alex. Do you mind if I put it on my blog? It sounds as if this council man is prejudiced against Spanish people!

I love my dogs but I hope that dogs won't be disallowed within the city limits because some people are bad dog owners. That seems to be the council man's thinking.

Although the comment about Spanish people really, really sounds prejudiced. I would go forward with that comment.
