She has been randomly laying since mid July. Has laid a couple triple yolk eggs,a few "normal" eggs but more soft shell than normal. I feed Purina Layer Crumbles, she has oyster shell, gets fresh veggies, mealworms and black oil sunflower seeds. Her eggs are huge. It isn't unusual for her to lay 2 eggs a day. Is that normal for her breed ? Is all the odd eggs just her way for getting into normal laying ? Should I be feeding something else ? TIA

How long has she been laying ? Laying 'glitches' are not all that uncommon at the beginning of a laying cycle, but it may be that she has some congenital abnormalities that are causing this unusual pattern of laying. I doubt that anything in your husbandry practices is causing these problems.

Maybe it is a breed thing...mine does the same thing and she is about the same age. She will just be standing on the lawn and poop a soft egg and then turn around in an hour and then do it again. The next day a big beautiful double yoke.

This is my first group of chickens and they just started laying a couple weeks ago. They were 16 weeks old when they started. One of my four SGs is laying huge eggs. Mostly double yolkers, but yesterday an extra extra jumbo egg. Broke it open for breakfast today and it is a triple! From what I am reading, their bodies are getting used to the laying process so I don't expect this to last forever. But it is really fun.

How is your Sapphire Gem doing? Mine are 23 weeks old as of Wednesday, and I have seen several double yolk eggs (HUGE eggs). However I have one that is laying soft shell and sometimes shell less. Her name is Luna and she is a flock favorite.

At first I wasn't quite sure who was laying the soft and no shell eggs, as they were being laid at night and found under the roost below 2 of my Sapphires. I added an extra oyster shell feeder in my run, because I figured whoever it was wasn't paying attention to the first one.

I'm pretty sure she was laying twice, once with the soft shell as well as a hard shell because I was finding 7 hard shell eggs a day from all 7 of my sex linked chickens. The last 3 days I have been short an egg.

Last night I brought Our Sapphire named Luna in because I noticed she was acting off as if she was needing to lay, but couldn't. After they went into the coop last night I found her below the roost (which is odd for her because she is at the top of the pecking order and ALWAYS on the top roost) I brought her inside and fed her some yogurt for the extra calcium and probiotic. She then pooped what looked like egg white mixed into it, and dropped a single yolk with no shell at all. I'm not sure what to do.

This morning she seemed perked back up, the first to greet me when I was letting the girls out of the run. My Sapphires began laying at 18 weeks old.
