image.jpg Hi, I’m almost 12 months into my chicken journey and have been using this forum as a reference along the way but thought it was about time to join in .
So we are from the sunny Gold Coast, Aust (Any other Aussies on the forum?!) and we talk about our girls as if they are family. They all have human names too.
So far in my 12 months I’ve had to surrender 3 rooster (who were all meant to be Pullets) had 2 chicks pass from various illnesses in their first week, had to bury my first hen last week who was attached by a wild bird while she was defending her girls. I now have 2 15 week olds (light Sussex & australorp) & my Isa Brown, Scarlet, who is my last layer at the moment.
My major concern at the moment is Scarlet is on her own except for my babes which she tollerates but doesn’t exactly love. Should I add a new laying hen into my mix to give Scarlet some company?
Anywho if you got to the bottom of this I Hi5 you. Thanks for reading and I hope someone has some advice for me . Pictured is Scarlet.

Hi Sarah and welcome to BYC. If you have the space to integrate a new bird, then why not :confused:I would suggest reading up on integration before making any plans. If space is tight, then I think that I'd leave things as they are. I'd imagine that once your pullets begin to lay, your flock will merge.

Of course there are more Aussies here quite a few chickens are a social bunch so getting her friends is good. I am sorry about the one you lost
Welcome to Backyard Chickens no I am not from Australia sorry

G’Day from Far North Queensland SarahMonique :frow Welcome!

I see you posted on the Aussie Thread :clap

I have been down to one lonely chicken and had to dash out and buy her a friend. While I definitely do not recommend waiving quarantine, I did on this occasion and because I introduced a single hen to a lonely hen, after just one day separated by wire, they were roosting together that night. I believe their need for company outweighed their need to bicker ;) However, if you introduce more than one, if they are already friends, they may gang up on Scarlet :(

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Best wishes and good luck!
