SauerKraut is it ok to feed?

Sauerkraut is a probiotic and can help to develop good bacteria that will help to fight e-coli and salmonella. I've been doing some research on it and it appears that although sauerkraut is not harmful for chickens, you should limit the amount due to the salt. I plan to grow cabbage and make my own sour mask kraut with low or no salt, just for my chickens.

YES sauerkraut is ok to feed and is a NATURAL probiotic....not sure on what kind.....AND vinegar KILLS the good bacteria so don't feed them any kind with vinegar :) :) if you are going to kill your chickens for food...feed them vinegar for a week before slaughter...it kills the good and bad bacteria.....just a little FYI for you guys :)

The good sauerkraut is the kind you ferment yourself or possibly is found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store...read the label...it should be cabbage and salt and water only.

What I learned when I fermented sauerkraut and subsequently canned it is that when I opened the jars, I rinsed and rinsed and rinsed! In a colander...to remove the bulk of the salt. Yum! It is such great food. But I agree...small amounts for the chickens.

Making the sauerkraut was a fun fun project!

If you ferment your own sauerkraut and use whey (the liquid from fermented raw milk) you can use half the salt. 1 cabbage, 1tablespoon salt, and 4 tablespoons whey. I would not give my chickens commercial kraut.

could the whey be from homemade yogurt? I can't get raw milk but I do have pasteurized non-homogenized nearly organic local cow's milk...so fortunate to have this dairy, and I regularly make yogurt with it...you might inspire me to ferment sauerkraut again.

Homemade sauerkraut, you all, is a delicacy and tastes nothing like what you get in the store. It is amazing and incredibly healthy. Think roasted pork loin, sliced apples and sauerkraut...maybe some onions and celery thrown in...I do this in a terrine in the oven. Nothing like it.

Möbius, Yes! You can strain your homemade yogurt and use that liquid for whey. The cloth for straining should be clean but not have bleach used on it, since we are cultivating microbes, not killing them lol
