Saving Chicken Poo for Fertilizer

I have a compost pile/bin made out of pallets. The pallets allow for two piles. I fill one pile in one year with kitchen scraps and coop cleaning and then I fill the next part the next year. I let the coop cleanings sit for a year before I use it on plants.

I have a sand box under my roost so the hens poop in
the sand box, while they sleep. I scoop out the poop with
a kitty litter scoop and store the poop in 5 gallon buckets
I get free from a local restaurant. The poop composts in
the buckets over time. I just tilled in 17 buckets worth of
poop into my watermelon patch and will be planting today.

Yes compost it, if you use it fresh it will be too hot and will kill plants.

I have used it as mulch when it is mostly wood shavings as part of ground cover around well established big trees far from house not composted... the big trees seem okay from that experiment.

Tried the same thing to use as mulch around more tender plants, that was a mistake... it absolutely should be composted.

Pic please:D

Yep. Compost so it will calm down some and be better used by the plants. Uncomposted is often too “hot”.

No, there's no need to. I just dump out the contents, rake
it out, then til it in. You must keep the buckets covered with
the lids or you'll have a big fly problem. This is my sand box
inside the coop.
