Hi to All you Chicken Owners!! :)
My Dean and I have been raising laying hens for about 6 yrs. We love our henny's.
This year for some reason we have had 3 hens get egg bound. The poor little henny's!!
I was giving the first hen a sitz bath in warm water and I was feeling so bad for her, that while she was resting in the warm water, I was thinking about my new book and about all of the good things that coconut oil does for us!!
I thought for awhile.. hum,.. I should try it on this hen and see if it might help her to pass the eggs so she won't have so much pressure!! What could it hurt or do, she might die anyway Right?? I had to try something!! So, I went into the house and scraped out a half cup of the coconut oil and put it on a plate and cut it into small pieces, set it in front of her and she started to gobble it down so fast. :))
The next day I fed her the same amount and then just let her wander around, walking is best for them. It gets things moving. Well, the third day I caught her up and turned her over and to my wonderful surprise.. her tummy was soft and it was down in size by half, then the next day after that which was today.. her tummy was back to normal and she was out with the other hens pecking and scratching. IT worked!!!! but I am still making sure that her and the other hens are getting the coconut oil too. Two other hens were getting bound too, so I started them today on the coconut oil.
Tomorrow, I will be slowly melting two big containers of coconut oil and I will be making Coconut oil feed blocks.. with chick corn scratch in it, then pour it into 2 milk jugs, let them harden,, then I will put it in a shallow pan and put it in a shady area in their pen so they have it to eat everyday to keep their digestive tracks going.
It must be I the shade so it won't melt.
I know that every chicken is different, but if you catch it in time, the coconut oil might just save your hens too, like it is doing for our hens.
I wanted to share my discovery with you all.. so your hens will have a big chance to survive this terrible issue.
Sharing our happy discovery with you and your hens :))
Hugs.. From Mama Peggy :)) Good Luck :))

I’m going to try my girls on coconut oil now too, I just don’t want to go through another egg bound issue it’s so upsetting!
