Saving Money

I would do that if they actually sold flaked shell, not the compressed pellets, in larger bags. It seems 10 lb is the biggest I can find.
Rosemary, do you remember where you found the 10lb of flaked shell? My little princesses also prefer the flaked, and it would be great to get a bigger amount at one time.

I've been ordering the Small Pet Select brand off Amazon (as my physical feed store was having stock issues) - it's very obviously crushed shell pieces but not specifically oyster shell. Previous to stocking issues I was buying Scratch & Peck oyster shell, which looked to be 100% oyster shell flake, but it's dustier.

Just a note. ;)

Oystershell doesn't spoil. So today I paid $15 for a 50# bag, which will last my large flock about 2 years.

The alternative is $7 for a 5# bag.

I keep it in the can because after a year or so the paper bag deteriorates.

Would those be a good size for bantams, or should I just stick with the smaller flakes?

I don't know enough about bantams to say.

 I've never given my chickens oyster shell.

I live on a pile of nutrient-poor quartz sand in an "impoverished ecology" and I feed all-flock, not layer. I figure it's cheap insurance.

My flock hovers between 20 and 30 laying hens and it lasts me about 2 years. :)
