Saw a Deer Hit on the Highway this Morning :(

So sorry, I know how traumatic that is.

When I was about 17 I hit a horse. It was night, the horse was black and jumped out of a ditch in front of my car. Now, over 20 years later, I still feel guilty and sick when I think about it.

Where I live at least 3 deer a day get hit in a 9 mile stretch . That should tell you something . Too many people moving out to the country with their 5 acre plots with no hunting signs . The wildlife will obviously flock to these areas where people think it's cute to feed them . As the deer population grows in these areas of "no hunting" you will see numerous hit on the road . I don't care how carefull you are , you will hit one . Solution.....either open up your land to safe hunting or carry a pistol with you to end the animals life after hitting it . Deer are very majestic....but they are also a nuisance .They are not bambi , they are animals that are being forced out of their habitat . Before someone brings up preserving more land for them...let me add one thing . Life is survival of the fittest.....it does not mean to kill off a species , more like control how many there are around . Don't allow 5-10 acre parcels of land . It drains the land of water causing shortages , and it harbors more deer that are protected by no hunting .

I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one who will not let an animal die alone....

Most animals want to die alone. It doesn't make sense to us, because we don't think like them. But weakness isn't tolerated by any species but ours, and animals go to great lengths not to show it. Our dogs don't want us to pet them when they're scared or sick, and if given the choice would crawl off somewhere quiet to die.

Thanks for the understanding words. It made for a really crappy Friday. It took my stomach until that afternoon to stop feeling like it was going to empty itself.

As much as I would have liked to have helped the deer I had absolutely nothing with me that I could have used to dispatch it with. There was absolutely nothing I could have done except in one way or another get word to Natural Resources Department about what happened. I heard later that a number of calls had gone in about the deer. I think the shock of the whole situation didn't help the matter. If I'm ever in such a situation again I will stop and try to assist the other driver. A good live and learn situation.

It's a good thing that dog was saveable. The dog I'm talking about died only about 3-5 minutes after being hit. He was a goner.

Bummer...I saw a bird hit today...It was a baby starling, but still...We were going someplace and DH didn't wanna stop, but I made him stop on the way back, but it was too late...I picked it up and moved it under a tree and said a prayer...I can't believe he stopped at ALL. the person who hit it didn't...

A dog almost got squished in front of me yesterday, but I pulled the car so that it was taking both lanes so he could get across. It was an old old dog too.

I hit a dog once, at full speed. I was traumatized over it.
I never found the dog, after it crawled off. I never knew what happened to it.

Ive never hit a deer, even though I live in one of the top states for it. I know people here who will pick them up when they're hit and take them home - for the freezer.

It takes all kinds.

Have ya'll never hit nothing before?? I've lost track of how many things I've hit. the last deer we hit my dh was driving, just nicked it, but it died, we threw it in the back of the truck and ate some of it for dinner.

One time did bother me tho. I hit a dog, but what made it all the worse is once I did, I went to the house near where I hit it and told the person there. He was a metally retarded man in his 40s, and he pushed past me, ran outside, grabbed the dead dog, and cradled it in his arms sobbing. That one bothered me.
