Saw a fox outside this morning

Years ago we had a fox run after our chickens in our yard and around the house, in broad daylight. Amazingly, our Magnolia survived two directs hits by a fox.

Ours can be seen in broad daylight as well, in the middle of our back acreage, which is wide open and mowed.

Fox are another reason we no longer free range.

A 30.06 deals with a fox quite nicely as well.

Regarding foxes and broad daylight:

Two days ago all my 8 chickens (except one scared little girl) were massacred in broad daylight by foxes. I let the chickens out at 7:30am when I fed all the animals. By the time I came back out at 11:30am, there were feathers everywhere! They are so silent!

Is a rooster effective at all as a deterrent? The horses and goats did not help at all.

Now they cannot be let out at all unless we are there. So much for helping with the horse manure.

Are guinea hens any better at surviving fox attacks?

The only real protection from predators is a Fort Knox-style run with a roof, hardware cloth, and buried wire with cement over it around the perimeter. Even then, predators such as bears (and thieving humans) may find a way in.
