i HAD TWO LARGE PINE STUMPS GROUND OUT, AND AS A RESULT, I HAVE A HUGH PILE OF PINE SAWDUST. NOT FINELY GROUND, BUT NOT REALLY DUSTLIKE. I LAYERED IT WITH DIRTH IN MY COMPOST PILE, BUT HAVE A TRUCKLOAD STILL. i NEED IT GONE. I WAS THINKING ABOUT SPREADING IT IN MY CHICKEN PEN. I ONLY HAVE TWO RHODE ISLAND RED HENS. CAN I SAFELY USE THIS IN MY PEN ? IT HAS A STRONG PINE SCENT. ANYONE WHO CAN ENLIGHTEN ME ON THIS I WOULD BE MUCH OBLIGED. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ON THIS.

As long as it is not cedar I think it would be ok to use.

I have heard good and bad about saw dust. One one hand, it can be absorbent and good for dust bathing. But on the other hand, I have heard it can cause burns because it over heats. Be careful using it around chicks as they can eat it and clog up the crop.

You might ask this question in our Coop and Run Construction forums for more input on this...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance

Good luck and welcome to our flock!

Depending on the coarseness of the sawdust, I think it is fine to use it in your chicken coop. If it is too fine, though, they may eat it, which will cause problems if done so excessively.

It might be helpful to post a photo of this possible future bedding.
