Sawdust??

Now that you mention it, I will say that there was one horse barn where I worked for a while that used sawdust for bedding that was, I don't know how to describe it, sort of little "pills" of sawdust rather than loose dust. THAT was actually pretty good stuff, not too dusty, pretty absorbant, not excessively hard to clean out. I assume there is some particular wood-processing or woodworking machinery that produces that effect, sort of little small pellets, but I have no idea what exactly.

THAT kind of sawdust would be real good for a coop, if you could find it.

Mix it with grass clippings from your lawn in season. Also try to find line-clearing crews and have them come and dump their chips in your place. Mix with the chips. Great to recycle on to the garden and flower/shrub beds when time to replace. I would use it all of the time if I had it. Hear that cedar is bad tho. If ventilation is really good as is in my coop, may not harm them anyway.

I think straight cedar would be bad but mine is usually mixed so it is just a little cedar. I don't use any sawdust with cedar in it for my nest boxes.
Sure makes the chicken coop smell nice and keeps down the insects.
