Say it isn't So!

I think one of the reasons some show breeders do cull (as in kill) birds is because some (when animals are rehomed with them) will take the birds with faulty problems, breed them and then "credit" the breeding/birds to the show breeder. This can make a bad name for them and damage their reputation.

And here again is the entire reason for culling for the show arena.
Perfection to Standard is the goal in show breeding. Nothing less suffices and as so well stated, reputations are on the line.

Culling in general, whether dispatching the bird or rehoming, is done by those with a purpose... those with an end goal in mind. It is a disciplined, final act and isn't done lightly or haphazardly.

In days gone by it was more important to ensure vigor, prepotence and a reliable food/income source with poultry. So culling was practiced to ensure these ends.
Quality was more important than Quantity, as it were. That then held over in the show arena, once poultry fancy took hold.

Today's New Age notions of "live and let live" had not taken hold back then. Today, culling as a practice tends to viewed as an uneccessary, near heinous practice by those less inclinded towards discipline and quality in the chicken yard.

The caution is this: the topic of culling tends to galvanize the BYC population like only a few other subjects. It is a hotly debated topic and invariably stirs up someone. Be mindful of that - and the fact that each is his own master in his own chicken yard.
