Saying Goodbye..

Since they are all raised from day one chicks and used to seeing and being with each other, why not set up a bachelor pad for them away from the hens. I've read that alot of BYC'ers do that. There wont be any hens to fight over and they will eventually establish their own pecking order without much disturbances. I've read about success stories regarding bachelor pad setups. If there were other roosters introduced from somewhere else....it would be a bloody mess. But yours are all growing up together...just an idea. (Enabling lol.)

You know you are doing the right thing and once their are re-homed you will feel so much better! It will be tough. You may cry. We all understand. HUGS

Yeah..I guess I'm not rural enough for that (I live on a busy road) but I live in a agricultural area..I mean there are farms everywhere..I guess I will keep trying..Maybe I will ask the Farmers Co-op store if I could put a sign up?

I've never been able to sell mine. I have to give them away for free. If they are special to me I put them up to 'good home' only and screen as best as I am able. If I am overrun with baby boys, I distance myself early and those are just 'free'. So far everyone has gone to homes that at the very least I believe will grow them out and treat them humanely before they become soup.

I am rehoming my main roo now and am trying to find him a 'non soup' home - I have at least one good potential taker. He's a great roo, but he crows from 330AM all the way to dusk. Every two minutes. I am rural, and I can probably have him, but I like my neighbors and I want them to be happy as well. A rooster crowing at dawn and a few times during the day is no problem, but my poor roo just can't stop. I'll miss him!

Also, I'm such a bleeding heart I'd keep ALL my roos and feed them too, IF they weren't their own worst enemies. If roos just were hens that crowed and didn't lay eggs, I'd feed them and take lots of pics of the super pretty chickens. However.. they will fight and wear out the ladies and that's just not good for anyone.

I know..If they could just behave themselves!! And of course I have to think of my poor girls..maybe if that starts happening I can get a little more strength

Thanks again guys..I can see I am not alone..

And belive me..I have nothing against people eating/killing/raising chickens for meat ..I respect and think it's great that people raise them humane and they are taken care of before they use them for their meat..I just personally couldn't do it..and I guess I don't know if I could handle one of my boys going there..don't know..

I totally understand what you are going through. This was our first year with straight run chicks and, fortunately, we only got 3 roos. As soon as they start crowing, I have to rehome them. The first one was a Silver Ameraucana who was adopted by a fellow BYCer. It was not too hard to let go of him since he was going to a fellow chicken lover. Today I am rehoming roo #2 who is an olive egger (75% black copper marans and 25% blue Ameraucana). I put an ad on Craigs List and had only 1 response on the first day. It happened to be a lady who is starting to raise chickens after not having them for a few years. She lives on three acres just outside of the town I work in. She has chicks hatched from brown and green eggs and thinks that our little roo will be perfect for the breeding experiments that she is planning to start. I am thrilled that he will have a nice home with hens of his own. But, it is still hard to give him up. I wished that I lived on three acres and could have all the chickens that I wanted. I still have 1 roo left and he is a purebred Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. I am hoping that he doesn't start crowing for a while!

Awww I am sorry! I know..This really stinks!! I wish it wasn't so hard..Yeah I bought 5 Olive Eggs and hatched 5 Roos LOL
Out of 3 Blue laced Reds hatched 3 Roos Out of 2 Ameracaunas 2 Roos

I am the luckiest girl in the world..

But you did get lucky finding those kinds of homes...I did find a good home for my one lavender Roo (I am keeping one) He is too beautiful
She wants to breed him so I feel comfortable and plus I saw her place and she is very sweet and I know will love him like me..

Well..Good luck to you too..Sounds like you have a beautiful boy there!
