Hello all. So here's the way my husband and I came to have chickens. Our daughter had convinced my husband she looooved chickens! Wanted them as pets, had quirky names picked out everything. So in June of this year he ordered one of those small hen houses and set it up, took her to pick out 2 girls and brought them home. Her love lasted about 3 days:thbut for my husband and I it had just started:love. I'm not sure what breed the feed store just called them production reds. We ended up building a run 8x10 and putting the small house inside and got 2 more. We had 4 girls, Nugget, Penelope,Scarlet, and Mabel. Oh I forgot to mention we have 2 mastiffs, Ash and Bear, a black lab mix Akasha, a Boston terrier named Igor, and 2 cats Loki and Pan.We also ended up with 2 ducks. A Peking named Yin and a swedish named Yang. Can you say "house full"? lol In these few short months the run became a coop, the girls had run of the back yard with the dogs all freinds and all was good. We got 3 more chickens from a breeder. Two swedish flowers, Peaches and Coraline and a barndeville, Cinnamon. Everything was going good till our first 4 girls became sick. Three of them had wet pox and the other a respiratory infection. On the advice of the vet we put the 3 down and the other went into the house to be isolated and nursed back to health.I bleached the coop and burned the litter. We have gotten 5 more girls to add to the flock. Two Ameraucana we named Buttercup and Phoenix, a silver laced wyandotte named Anastasia, a salmon favorelles our daughter named Hedgewig and a dark brahma named Bertha. It's been an interesting few months. I came across this group after all this and are hoping to learn much more on keeping our girls healthy and safe. We love watching them and seeing the different personalities they have. They are so curious and I love how they come up and have to get right into the way to see what you are doing :)
