Saying hello from the UK

Yes, just like humans becoming institutionalised after being in prison long term, our poor ex batts are the same. Our well-meant gift of freedom is enormously stressful and then, because we feel so sorry for them, we tend to over-treat them, give them all sorts of enrichment opportunities, spend lots of time getting 'in their face' and simply love them to death. I did this to two of my first rescued girls and it broke my heart. When I took them to the vet, wondering why they seemed to be failing fast despite my efforts, he rather matter-of-factly told me that he'd lost count of how many ex batts he'd seen die because of 'over-sentimental stupidity'. Whilst I was very put out by his attitude, I realised he was absolutely right...I killed them with kindness. They died ten days after I got them....just ten days of freedom but ten days of complete stress and fear.

So take things slowly and imagine them as prisoners who need careful re-hab. Love them from afar, allow them to take baby steps to their new life and enjoy watching them flourish x

Your right i cant believe how helpful happyhens is, I will be contacting her and taking on board as much advice as i can

Good advice people dont see that do they. Just leave them alone till they are ready to come out ,all as i need do is make sure they have there mash, water, and warm bedding and obviously keep them safe for the first couple of weeks.
Is there anything else you can suggest for the first few days to make it easyer for them

Hello everyone,
I am very new to all of this, we have just completed our chicken run in the garden and will hopefully collect our chickens on Sunday.
We have decided to go with Pekin as lots of people suggest they make great garden chickens as well as pets.
Looking forward to learn more from you guys out there.
