Just introducing myself. I will be getting my first chickens at the end of June. We are taking a trip and I want to wait until we get back since the babies need so much care. I'm looking forward to chatting with you all and learning as much as I can. Ty!

Welcome to BYC!

Lots of really nice breeds out there depending on what you are looking for in chickens. The Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Plymouth Barred Rocks, Wyandottes, Sussex's, EE's are all very friendly birds, make great pet and are great on the laying too. The Orpingtons are especially very docile and friendly and make great kid pets.

You might want to check out these two breeds pages for some quick info in each breed and their attributes...

Have fun with your new flock this summer! Asking about chickens breeds will garner you a lot of unsolicited advice here on this forum. And here's some now!

I've just tried Black Australorps this year, and while they aren't laying yet (10 wks old), they have been a delight. And pretty! The photos don't do them justice!

Thanks so much for the welcome and replies/links! My local feed shop has buff orps and Dominique's. I'm def getting an Orp, but will look into the Dominique's. I want sweet and docile chicks. With 3 kids, I think that's the best route to go. I'm also looking at Brahmas, EE and Ameracaunas. (sp?)
