I have a 2 year old hen who is a great layer, but recently she has stopped laying as many as she used to. I think maybe it might be the hot temperatures we've been having. It's been in the upper 80's and that's high for Montana where i live. But then i saw two other hens pecking at her vent. I looked at it and it has a scab on it right above the opening of the vent. and you can tell it has been bleeding, not that much but still, and she is sort of contracting her vent closed and open. Maybe from the pain? i have know idea. do you know why this is happening, can i get the other hens to stop picking on her?

I recommend that you closely inspect your 2 year old hens' vent area where she's getting pecked. It's possible the other hens see external parasites and are pecking at them. Watch for feather picking as well. You can put Nu-Stock on the affected area and it will eventually heal, and will deter the other hens from pecking the area at the same time. Nu-Stock comes in a tube and can be found in the equine section at a feed store. Wear disposable gloves when applying it.
