Ok the chicken coop is infected
we had 3 hens go broody and refused to leave the box accept to get food and water so they got mites now we have a coop of 50+ chickens needing to be treated we plan on using red kote but is there any thing we need to know about using it and is there anything else we should do/use. We have babies in the coop around 4 months old should I be worried about them or can they be treated like the rest.

and another question is there any way to prevent the hens from doing this again or should we just sell them I cant go out and buy 5 bottles of red kote for 12 weeks every summer they have been broody all summer and quite frankly i'm getting sick of it.

Thanks for any help

Scaley leg mites can be treated with just plain old vegetable oil, applied and rubbed in once a week. Spray the coop and remove the bedding, and replace it also. Do you see any evidence of mites or lice on their skin around the vents, under wings or around necks? Permethrin garden dust, spray, or Sevin dust will treat that. Mites have to be treated every 5-7 days to get the eggs when they hatch. Here are some good links to read:

Ok thank you so far the plan sounds like
1st we clean out bedding and dust the coop (can we dust with sevin or DE which works best) or should we be Red kote-ing the coop
2nd instead of red kote we rub in vegetable oil once a week or every 5 days (is that right)
I already checked for mites on their bodies and couldn't see any
