Glad she is doing so good. This seems to be an almost common injury. My EE hen recently had the exact same type wound ,we though at first she would not make it. She is nowl fine except for a weird fearther-dew on the top of her head. Again very happy to see your bird is ok.
I had a problem with a couple injuries like that before we got rid of our extra roos (we had about 3 times as many roos as hens because our "straight run" chicks ended up being 47 roos and 3 hens). We lost a couple of our existing hens and never could figure out what was happening. One day I saw a dead hen under the roost, but when I went to pick up the body ... she moved! She was lying on her side, COVERED in mud. I could not even tell what color she was. Could not tell if she was BO, RIR, EE, or mutt. The only movement was a little twitch when I poked her with my toe to loosen her up from the mud. I almost put her down, but on a whim decided to give her a try.
I took her in the house, gave her a bath and discovered she was one of the BO/RIR hens ... beautiful golden colored birds ... and her comb was ripped pretty much completely off and her skull was exposed. I bathed and dried her then used peroxide and triple antibiotic ointment on her wound. I held her on my lap for hours forcing her to drink watered down gatorade every little bit. She could not stand and her eyes were swollen shut from the trauma. After a good bit of gatorade water and some rest, she was finally able to held herself upright. Next day I started feeding her chick starter softened with gatorade water. She nibbled at it a bit. Next day, she ate voraciously. I had to hold her food up for her and move it around so she would hit it when she pecked because she could not see. Amazingly, after 3 days of penicillin and about 5 days of mash and gatorade, the swelling went down and the wound stopped oozing. I then moved her outside to her own cage.
It took months for the scab to go away completely, and her comb in permanently deformed, since most of it was removed, but she is now happy and healthy and back to laying full force! She hates me though and screams and runs whenever I come into the coop, lol.
I have too many EE and RIR roos right now. My poor hens were getting naked until I separated the extras out of the main group. I am trying to sell off the ones I dont think I will need later.
I guess yours ganged up on your hen? I have seen mine try that but the main roo always saves the day.
I never thought a quail would do such damage. I keep saying I am going to get him some female quail but for now he is living with my ameraucanas. He scares my dogs, my geese and my daughter the way he comes after everything. We named him Killer! and thou shalt NOT whistle bob white nearby or else he will get you!
