My chicken was scalped and is recovering. When eating chick feed, he suddenly gets pain and starts scratching his head. What should I do? Is this related to beak muscle use or crop?

My thoughts, too. I just had a guinea with the most hideous scoping I've ever seen. He recovered, but the scratching was an issue.Do you have any pictures? I would guess that when he puts his head down the skin is pulled and is irritated. The 2 things I would do are to apply plain antibiotic ointment or vaseline after cleaning the wound twice a day. The other is to offer wet mushy feed from a small bowl or cup held up to his beak 2-3 times a day.
Skin was off halfway down his neck. He seemed to be doing better, but was losing weight even though eating well. But he passed.Do you have any pictures? 8 wks The other rooster jumped on top of the enclosure. The corner was loose enough he got in. He's going to freezer camp. A couple of days later he tore the comb on a hen.How old was he? I am sorry that you lost him.
