Last week my husband went outside and interrupted a red-tailed hawk in the middle of attacking one of our drake magpies. The poor fellow got scalped (skull showing) and a few puncture wounds. We cleaned him up and tried some vet wrap on him and put him in a dog crate to keep him quiet and isolated.
After a week of cleaning the wound (and leaving it open after the first couple days) we released him to a larger hospital pen and big tub of water. He seems to be doing just fine and the wound is healing. Can't wait for the skin to grow back and cover that skull though.
Sadly, the day after he got scalped a second duck was killed. Husband didn't get out there soon enough. A week of standing guard and that red-tailed hawk hasn't come back.
The ducks were too big for the hawk to take away, so he looked like he was planning on consuming what he could right there. Two years with ducks and this was our first attack of any kind here in beautiful western Mass.
