My chicken have scaly leg mites. I have been putting vaseline on their legs, but I also heard that you can use ivermectin for them. Can I use Bimectin (Ivermectin) Deworming paste for horses on them? That's the only thing I could find so far. If yes, how and what dose?

We only applied vaseline -- AND we drenched all the perches in kerosene for good measure -- and our scaly leg mite cleared up after three weeks or so. Make sure you don't consume their eggs during or after the Ivomec if you use it -- there's a withdrawal period of 10-14 days for most of those kids of meds on their labels.

Our girls' legs took several months to regain their shape and health after the mites died off -- they were bad when we got them. Just one more reason to quarantine adult birds (or never bring them in).

Good luck! Vaselining a chicken's legs makes for good bonding time and great watercooler conversation.

WD-40 works great also, sprayed on the leg's and feet every other day or so it clears up in no time.
