Scaly Leg Mites - Need Best / Easiest / Quickest Solution - Scaley

Thank you- and also to Krisrose who gave me the name so I could search and find this thread.

I brought her inside and soaked her feet in warm water and Aveeno colloidal oatmeal bath. She seemed to relax and I dont think she would have ever moved if I hadnt exhausted my ability to continue to hold her up. Good long soak. And I see how absolutely horrible her feet are. I felt/feel so terrible. I pat-dried them with a towel, sprayed them with dermoplast and then coated them in bag balm.

When i put her back on the perch, I snatched up Frizzle. Her feet are not that bad at all- just a small amount of raised scales but I repeated the process with her. She wasnt nearly as happy to soak her feet but we managed for a few minutes. Dried them off and coated her feet as well.

I am very glad that I did something tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow. I will buy something tomorrow to spread around in the coop or at least to treat the roost that they use to sleep on.

Do roosters as they age have the scales on their legs get bigger or thicker? Or is that a sign of mites?

Our rooster is 10 years old (about) his toes look normal, but the scales on his legs look more like armor than scales. any thoughts?

it has been slowly spreading through the flock, so i decided to look it up on this forum for ideas, and have been following everyones comments & experience with avid interest......

Last sunday i gave them the above treatment, grab a lady at a time off the roost, give her a 30 sec leg dipping in CANOLA OIL with (enough) TEA TREE OIL (to be able to smell it)
and HONESTLY i can not believe the difference in seven days. the clumped up protruding ugly scales have more or less ALL GONE, new scales are growing already, and their legs, some of which were looking really pink, don't know if inflamed or if thats just the natural colour underneath the scales, are all looking so lovely and normal.

I gave them another footbath tonight, just to get rid of the last stubborn few.

I have a hen (Fancy) who got sick about 3-4 weeks ago she would just stand around all hunched up and wouldn't eat she had dihrarra so I brought her in the house for about 2 weeks she seemed to be better eating drinking. I put her back out in the coop and she seemed to be fine was walking around with the other hens and acting normal except that she can't jump up on the roost at night and she isn't laying anymore. Every night I go out and put her up on the roost with the others so she won't get cold. Monday I was in the hospital and wasn't here to put her up so my husband had to do it when he got home at 12:30 am and yesterday she was back to just sitting around all hunched up and I brought here back in the house. She is eating and drinking but she has diherria again. Does she have some kind of deficienty or what can I do to get her back to being normal again? thanks H

well I was told anything strong like wd40 and such can cause resperatory problems and is not good for them. I was told by the local farm store to use petroleum jelly, veg. oil or something like that. My babies have got it bad. a couple so bad they can hardly walk. I didn't know what it was but have now coated their feet w/ some Bag Balm. It's like vaseline but medicated. Hope it works! I think they might also have mights. This is our first little flock of bantams and I had no idea, it was just kind all of a sudden type thing and I noticed one of them not wanting to walk on one foot and lying around a lot. I'm a bad chicken mommy!

I used Oil of Oregano mixed with olive oil (because the oregano is very potent...) and it worked really well.

I meant to say that I applied the Oil of Oregano directly to the legs for several days...

they guy at the farm store here told me that Kero. was an old wives rememdy and probably will work but not the best choice. Vicks didn't come up but I know the vapors are strong and might irritate their sensitive reps. system?? I probably would just stick w/ the oils or vaseline type stuff. From what I've read and researched it works well. After the initial fight to paint it onto their feet they did seam to act as if they felt better after I put the Bag Balm on their feet tonight. I also saw something on another site that said Eucolyptus oil is an natural anticeptic/disinfectant and could be used diluted w/ water to spray the coop/roost area. That and tea tree was also mentioned for dipping their feet in. Tea tree and veg or linseed oil.
