Scaly leg mites?

In Gail Damerow's book, The Chicken Health Handbook, she writes "brushing perches and chickens' legs once a month with a mixture of one part kerosene to two parts linseed oil (not motor oil)."
Has anyone tried this?

I'm sure quite a few people have used that method. It's also on the ChickenChick's blog.
This from what I understand is very effective in treating SLM.
Some people would say not to use Kerosene, it is up to the poultry keeper to determine what they deem is safe and effective treatment. Seeking vet care is always a good option.
