Hi! A few weeks ago we were given a bantam rooster by our local TRUSTED feed store. When first receiving him I noticed his feet looked different from the rest of our flock but didn't think too much of it because we trust our feed store and they had had him for a while. Anyways, I started doing some research on mite prevention and found multiple pictures that would suggest that our sweet little boy may have a very nasty infestation. Do you think this looks like leg mites? and if so what do we do? and can people get them ? (I swear I have been itching ever since doing research about mites)

thank you!!

Sure looks like scaly leg to me. I read a very informative blog entry earlier today about lice and mites. I'll see if I can find it

There is info on Treating Scaley Leg on the Poultry Podiatry page on the site linked in my sig below. I personally have never been able to eradicate it completely in my birds, but I have a hard time keeping on a schedule for treatments.

I had scaly mite really bad on some bantams i had bought. i used "bag balm" which is an udder treatment for sun burn on cows udders for dairy cows it is at your local TSC store and is in a small dark green can. It has a menthol smell to it and is a Vaseline base. I used it once.....and didn't have to treat again. slather it on and rub up and down the leg to get the gel under the scales. It is not expensive either.....hope this helps.

do a search on google and you will see a pic.

Great!! thanks so much for all your help. We are going to start treatment on him this weekend. We will also treat the rest of the flock just in case.
