My big roo has very scaly legs and feet, really, really scaly. We've dipped him (his feet) in oil, and they turned real real scaly again. One of the hens picks at his legs and we've had to spray them with stuff to keep her from doing that. What can we do for this roo with ugly scaly feet and legs?

hey get yourself sum surgical spirit and vasaline gel .

dip legs is spirit to kill the mites them cover the legs in vasaline to killl any eggs or mites that are left .

repeat after two weeks and that should clear it up.m

I had them on half of my 4 year-olds. I dip the chicken in 2 gallons of warm water, 1-2cup of goat wash (permrethrins), and about a 1/2 cup of dish liquid. I saw results in a few days. The concoction foams so keep their head up. Do it when it is warm enough for them to dry. Dish liquid kills most bugs and makes the ingredients sticky. Permrethrins are the nerve agent. Should kill any bug that they have on them. I tried just spraying their legs with straight goat wash

; didn't help. Might make their feathers a little messy but will change quickly.

OKay, this is what I do...l had this happen with my first set of chickens. I use Sevin dust(yes it's spelled this way). You can buy it at walmart in the farm and garden section. I take that and first dust the chicken all over in the dust. Then I take a large glob of vaseline, mix it with the sevin dust and then cake(I mean cake) the chicken's legs in this stuff. Make sure to get in all the nooks. He has scaley leg mites, which is mites that burrow under the chickens scales. This is painful for the chicken and can cause toe loss if not treated. Anyhow, the vaseline suffocates the mite. I do this every 5-7 days and usually do about 3-4 treatments total. The scales will literally start falling off in chunks revealing fresh, pretty new scales. I would dust all your chickens with the sevin dust...mites are relentless on them!! Good luck!!!

I have always used Vet RX for chickens, straight from the bottle, rub liberally on feet and legs right into the feathers above the legs. I use it spring, summer and fall (aprox. once every other month) when migrant birds come through to prevent ever getting leg mites. I have never had a problem with leg mites doing it this way. I know it works great. I used it on two chickens years back that I got from a friend who had them pretty bad. Applied it each night for a week and they were gone.
It is also good if you hear any chicken sneeze in the cold season. I put it on my hands and wipe their chest and under each wing (only the excess that is on your hands) and it seems to clear them up over night.
