scaly legs ??? cause???

Some of my chickens have nice smooth legs and others look like they are shedding their skin of the legs like a snake! What should I do for them? Are they lacking something in their diets or do I need to rub lotion on their legs???? I feel sorry for them.

Sounds like scaly leg mites.

Post a pic if you can. Like alexysmommy said, it sounds like it could be scaly leg mites, but a pic would help to confirm that. Here's a link about them if you would like to check it out.

The first question I ask you is what kinds of chickens do you have? For example, I have an ameracauna (sp?) and her legs are scaley looking but I believe it's the breed. My other hens have "normal" chicken looking legs. Hope that makes sense. I am sure someone with more experience than me will give you some help. Good luck. As for lotion, I do love Aveeno... ha!

I will post some pics later but I'm sure that IS what it is but I'm just confused why ALL the birds don't have them? I didn't see any signs of mites for a long time but the other day I think I saw one little white bug and one little grayish bug so I went crazy w/ the DE! I haven't used it in a while and that is probably why I'm having a problem now. I piled some up on a piece of plastic. I put each bird on the pile and used my hands to rub it under wings, on chest, necks, backs, every where except head and they seemed to enjoy the cool feeling it had! I cleaned out their pens and put DE on ground and nests but I still need to treat the legs themselves w/ vasoline or vapor rub (I guess I'll try that first.) I hope I don't have to go w/ the Ivomec but I will if it doesn't get better.
