Some of my hens have large scales that have come away at the bottom is this a cause to worry? Is thre a cure

Yes, it does have a cure. Scaly leg mites is a common disease. It is caused by mites that crawl into the crevices of your chickens feet and cause the scales to rise up and stick out, and it is very uncomfortable to the chicken. Best ways of treating this is to smother the legs with vaseline. This engulfs the mites and they'll die. Repeat the treatment every day until the scales turn back to normal.

Check out this thread, it has tons of good advice and treatments from the BYC community and pictures too!
